The lifespan you can expect from a vertical lift gate is typically 2-3 times longer than a cantilever slide gate. Maintenance costs are significantly less, and downtime for repairs generally are much lower and can be done in the field.

The quickest operation available, A vertical lift gate (VLG gate) opens in approximately 8 seconds. In contrast, a cantilever slide gate only opens at a 1-foot rate per second, which means it can take upwards of 20 to 24 seconds to open fully.

Unfortunately, people can run low on patience when waiting for a gate to allow passage. History shows us that impatient drivers tend to creep up on the gate as it opens, misjudging the distance and often bumping the gate. Even the smallest of bumps can put a bend in a cantilever slide gate track, requiring repair and shortening the gate operator’s life.

When a gate gets hit, the damage typically looks far worse than it is. Our vertical lift gates are constructed with 2” square tubing and 3/4” pickets that break away. Sections can be easily replaced in the field with a welding services truck, angle iron and replacement pickets typically within hours.

Since the vertical lift gates can typically be repaired in the field, the cost usually is in the range of a few hundred dollars. The downtime is also minimal, with most repairs being complete within a few hours. Slide gate repair costs are much higher because almost always, the gate must be taken back to a shop to replace its internal track.

Vertical lift gates have an average lifespan of 15-20 years due to their minimalist mechanical and space requirement attributes. Simply put, a vertical lift gate has less that can go wrong. And, with a regular maintenance plan in place, you could easily extend the life of your vertical lift gate to well beyond 20 years.
